FEMINIST LETTER NO 9
To all Feminists
ParliamentSummer was short (at least the part of it that was warm) and now the business of every day life flows into diaries and mailboxes. Parliament does not formally open until 14th of September, but as we know only too well, politics do not take a break. Questions can be submitted even now and once the budget has been presented it is time for the period when individual members can bring a bill before Parliament. This period runs until October 5th and allows for proposals on any subject on which one wishes the government to take a decision (or instructs the government to carry out certain tasks). And in this context I wish to say – make use of me!
Keep talking
Summer is also the time for talking without lists of speakers, the time for discussions that allow reflection, for meeting new people in inspiring surroundings, for long walks and creative thinking, etc. If we today agree that we have lived too long in an era of patriarchal political, economic and military power, then tomorrow must bring a paradigmatic shift. No more, nor less! Feminism does politics a good turn in manifesting the fundamental conflict in society between women as a group and men as a group, a conflict that expresses itself in ever more brutal and destructive ways and that actually stands in the way of the further progress of civilisation. Without a feminist dimension politics lack legitimacy! So why does it present such a challenge? Because it challenges ideas about biology and because it demands freedom. Because when women claim their right to be full human beings, this will change the way the world is perceived, since human beings up till now have been synonymous with men!
(since Man up till now has clearly been - synonymous with men!) *
(Engelskan ger ju lite extra tillfälle att spela på orden. Vad tycker Du?)
“Do we need revolt?”
This question was posed in an evening paper a few days ago. And Maria-Pia Boethius writes in an article in the Gothenburg paper Göteborgsposten this week: “I believe the time has come for a feminist party in Sweden, a party where feminism permeates all political issues”. This was partly in reply to the expressed desire of the right wing parties “to save women from collectivism”(?!?!), but also as a reaction to the two-block party politics we see emerging.
What is to come will be comparable to childbirth – once things have been set in motion, nothing can stop them. It is evident to me that there are many people who are keen to take an active part in the work for feminist change. As I see it, lots of people, all over the place, mainly women, are talking to each other on this subject. I receive invitations to speak in many different places. Since I am genuinely interested in knowing what is happening around the country, here is a list (as planned so far) of which towns I shall be visiting this autumn and when, so that those of you who live in the vicinity can get in touch.
